Checks to Make Before you Leave on a Wintery Journey

When winter comes around, it is not only time to get out the winter clothes you also need to get your car ready for winter as well. As many know, winter time can bring inclement weather, increasing your chances of being involved in a serious car accident.

You should do a full mechanical check of the tires, battery, lights, oil, radiator and antifreeze. Top up anything which is low, and check the tread of the tires, including the spare.

Once you are sure that the vehicle is ready for the winter roads, you should make sure you have your own winter survival kit as well. You should have a shovel, a torchlight and spare batteries as well as a tow rope and jump leads which might not only help you get out of trouble, but other road users as well.

Before you set off on any journey, make sure your cell phone is well charged and check the weather forecast for your intended route. Put together an emergency ration kit of snacks, water and a thermos of something hot, such as tea or soup.

Finally, tell someone when you leave and where you are going so that they can raise the alarm should you become stranded before reaching your destination.

K9 Dies in Overheated Car

Emma, a 7 year old black Labrador and K9, died on Monday having been left in an airport security vehicle, equipped to transport a K9.

Her handler, Cpl. Chris Richau, had left her inside the vehicle with the air conditioning running to investigate an incident inside the terminal where she was not required.

Leaving an animal in a vehicle is standard procedure, and vehicles which transport K9 animals are usually equipped with a system called K9 Cold Guard, which monitors the interior temperature of the vehicle. Once the temperature becomes too warm, the horn sounds and the windows roll down. The dog cannot escape due to the mesh screen in place.

Unfortunately Richau’s cruiser was not equipped with such a device and although the temperature was only in the mid 70’s, when he came back to the vehicle, Emma was dead.

Richau is said to be devastated and whilst all K-9 cars owned by the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office and Greenville Police Department have been outfitted with the devices, those at the airport are not.

Rosylin Weston, airport spokeswoman, said she did not know why the car did not have the device and that before getting a replacement for Emma, she would check with the police chief to see if the department would install the device.

Police later said the accident appeared to have been caused by a black Pathfinder failing to yield right-of-way.
