Lack of sleep impairs performance

Trucker Sleep

Dr Mark Roseland of the National Transportation Safety Board has warned that a lack of sleep can cause your performance to be impaired.

He stated that the average time someone should spend sleeping is eight hours a day, and if you are to lose only two of these hours in one night, your performance while driving will be the same as someone driving when they have been drinking alcohol.

He went on to say, that not only can lack of sleep in one single night affect the ability to concentrate, but that you can also accumulate, what he called, a sleep debt over time.

Losing one hour’s sleep a day for a five day week would mean a sleep debt of five hours. However this debt can be cancelled out by sleeping for longer at the weekend.

The good news is that you do not have to sleep for the whole five hours you have lost, as someone with sleep debt will sleep deeper and hence there is no need to sleep for the whole five hours.

However, should your sleep debt begin to mount up significantly, then it will become harder and harder to make it up and your performance will continue to be impaired.

Who is Eligible for the GM Compensation Plan?

Those who can claim following accidents caused by the defective switch installed in some GM cars are the families of those killed, plus injured survivors. The scheme will not only compensate those who were travelling in the GM cars themselves, but also victims in other vehicles who were involved in the same accident or any pedestrians.

The compensation plan will only pay out for those driving small GM cars which were involved in a recall for the faulty ignition switch this year, and not other GM vehicles involved in subsequent recalls.

In order to claim, the switch must have been at fault, which is evidenced by the airbag failing to deploy, and anyone who claims under the scheme will have to agree not to pursue General Motors for any further payment.

It cannot be denied that proving the switch was at fault may not be easy, as many of the vehicles have been destroyed and many accidents happened a long time ago. Hence while the investigation teams may have information available, such as the speed before the accident, whether the brakes worked, and the seat belts locked, often they will have to rely on police and insurance company reports instead.

Safety Authorities: Drugged Driving on the Rise

Public safety authorities across the country are indicating that more must be done to educate the populace about the dangers involved with driving under the influence of drugs. The United States has been moving towards the legalization of marijuana for the past couple of decades, since the 1996 voter initiative which legalized the drug for medical purposes in California. Now, with the legalization of pot in Washington and Colorado, public safety experts hope to avoid a serious rise in drugged driving automobile accidents.

Recent studies indicate that drugged driving may be becoming a true public safety concern. For example, Colombia University recently released a study which says that over the past 10 years there has been a 300% increase in drugged driving fatalities. And the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicates that high school seniors engage in shocking levels of driving while under the influence of drugs, with over 10% indicating that they had driven under the influence of marijuana.

As the country continues the liberalization of its attitudes towards marijuana, authorities must do a better job of not only educating young people about the dangers of the drug itself, but also the dangers of using marijuana and then operating a motor vehicle.

Biomechanical Expert Witnesses Help Victims Get the Compensation They Deserve

Modern technology has opened up entirely new fields of investigation into all manner of the human life. One of the most promising scientific areas, with relation to accident law, is biomechanical engineering. Biomechanical engineers study the way the human body responds to various internal and external loads and pressures. The practical application of this study is that these engineers can often use their expertise to reconstruct what happened in an accident.

The human body, like all physical objects, obeys certain rules and laws when interacting with the world around it. In the case of an accident the human body responds to the forces and traumas involved in the accident in certain predictable ways. For example, depending on how a loan is applied to a bone, the bone will fracture in one of a very small set of well-defined ways. Take a look at the following video for more information.

In the case of a trial involving major injuries to a victim, often times the victims’ attorney team will call an expert witnesses, such as biomechanical engineers. Greenville Basketball Player – 3 Others – In Horrific Accident Involving Train

Two people were killed and two others were left in critical condition after a train collided with a car this week in Tennessee.

The victims, three of which were basketball players at Roane State Community College, included 22 year-old Roderick Drummond, 22, from Greenville, SC, siblings Darius J. Gallaher, 20 and Jadah Gallaher, 18, and 20 year-old Hunter Crass, 20. According to the preliminary report the car in which the victims were traveling attempted to cross a railroad when it was it by a train. Roderick Drummond and Jadah Gallaher were killed in the accident while Darius J. Gallaher, the driver, and Crass continue to fight for their lives.

The survivors are currently being treated at the University of Tennessee Medical Center. Crass’ father says that his son suffered severe injuries including a collapsed lung, but was recently removed from a ventilator and is breathing on his own.

Apparently the driver of the car didn’t see the train as it approached, setting the stage for the accident. The train’s two employees were not harmed in the incident.
