On Wednesday, February 11, there was a six car wreck which left four people dead.
According to South Carolina Highway Patrol, the accident happened around 11 p.m. on Interstate 85 near mile marker 67 in Spartanburg County. A driver was seen by a trooper going the wrong way at a high rate of speed in the northbound lanes of Interstate 85. The trooper notified dispatch and asked for assistance. A state transport police officer saw the same driver and flashed his lights and sounded his siren at the driver, but to no avail and shortly afterwards there was a massive collision involving six vehicles.
Four people from Spartanburg County were killed: Martha Marie Diaz, aged 21, of Tinsley Heights Drive; Josh Leroy Smith, aged 60, of Carver Mill Road and 22 year old Shiree Lynette Whitaker, of Pierpont Avenue Extension, all died at the scene. Edwin Ferguson, aged 27, of Fernwood Glendale Road, died at the hospital. Several other individuals were transported to Spartanburg Regional for their injuries.
It is known that one of the fatalities was the wrong way driver but not which one.
According to investigators it is thought drugs or alcohol may have been a factor in the incident and the results of toxicology are awaited.
