Early on Sunday morning, July 3 two people riding a motorcycle in Anderson County were killed by a hit and run driver.
According to South Carolina Highway Patrol, the accident happened at around 2.45 a.m. on State Highway 28 near State Highway 24 just west of Anderson.
Thirty five year old Jesse Gene Speer, of Anderson, was driving a 2005 Nissan Altima and he hit a Harley Davidson from behind, causing the motorcycle to crash. He then left the scene.
Both the rider and passenger, Bryan Donald Smith and his wife, Shannon Michelle, who were both aged 46, were ejected from the motorcycle and died at the scene. Neither of them was wearing a helmet at the time.
Speer was charged with two counts of felony DUI involving death and two counts of leaving the scene of an accident involving death. He was released on bail of $500,000.
In court, Speer apologized and said he had no idea he had hit anyone.
